February 22 Romans 11-13 February 23 14-16 February 24 I Cor. 1-4 February 25 5-8 February 26 9-11 Paul wrote Romans as an organized and carefully presented statement of his faith--it does not have the form of a typical letter. He does, however, spend considerable time greeting people in Rome at the end of the letter. FAITH What does Paul mean when he speaks of saving faith? He ties faith so closely to salvation. It is not something we must do in order to earn salvation--if that were true, then faith would be just one more deed, and Paul clearly states that human deeds can never save us. Istead, faith is a gift God gives us because He is saving us. It is God's grace, not our faith, that saves us. In His mercy, however, when He saves us He gives us faith--a relationship with His Son that helps us become like Him. Even in Old Testament times, grace, not deeds, was the basis of salvation Hebrews 10:4 states "it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins" God intended for people to look beyond the animal sacrifices to Him, but all too often they instead, put their confidence in fulfilling the laws, that is, performing the sacrifices. We can never come to God through our own faith, any more than His Old Testament people could come through their sacrifices. Instead, we must accept His gracious offer with thanksgiving and allow Him to plant the seed of faith within us. Chpt 12 thru 16--Paul moves from the theological to the practical, he gives guidelines for living as a redeemed people in a fallen world. Throughout this sectiion, we learn how to live our faith each day. Keep in mind Paul had not yet been to Rome to meet all the Christians there. I CORINTHIANS On a bed of grass a chameleon's skin turns green. On the earth, it becomes brown. It's natural to fit in and adapt to the environment. But followers of Christ are new creations, born from above and changed from within, with values and life-styles that confront the world and clash with accepted morals. True believers don't blend in very well. The Christians in Corinth were struggling with their envoronment. Surrounded by corruption and every conceivable sin, they felt pressure to adapt. They knew they were free in Christ, but what did this freedom mean? How should they view idols or sexuality, about marriage, women in the church and the gifts of the spirit? Paul heard of their struggles and wrote this letter to answer their questions. Unity is emphasized in this book. I Corinthians calls all Christians to be careful not to blend in with the world. We must live Christ centered, blameless, loving lives that make a difference for God. The Corinthians were rallying around various church leaders, Peter, Paul, and Apollos. These loyalties led to intellectual pride and created a spirit of division in the church. The Christian life was never promised as an easy way to live, instead, Paul constantly reminds us that we must have a purpose and a plan because times will be difficult and Satan will attack. But we never persevere without the promise of a prize--a promise God will keep. We will be given a crown that will last forever, have eternal life. We will live with Christ; we will reign with Him. He is always faithful to us and always carries out His promises. | |
